In 1908, Bentz came up with a solution that was both simple and revolutionary: she used a piece of absorbent paper from her son's school notebook to filter coffee. After cutting a circle out of the paper and placing it in a metal container with holes in it, she poured the coffee and hot water into it, managing to make coffee without any residue. This process gave birth to the world's first filter coffee.

The success of her invention led Melitta and her husband, Hugo Bentz, to found the Melitta company in 1908. Since then, the company has become synonymous with filter coffee, with its products sold worldwide.
