The Right Coffee Grind Setting: A Complete Guide

Grind size directly affects the taste, body and extraction time of your coffee. Getting it wrong can mean a bitter, over-extracted cup - or a weak, watery one.

Why grind size matters

Espresso forces water through the grounds under pressure in seconds, so it needs a very fine grind for enough resistance. Filter coffee drips slowly over several minutes, so it needs a coarser grind - otherwise it over-extracts and turns bitter.

The right grind by method

      Espresso: fine, like powdered sugar

Filter/drip machine: medium, like coarse sand

      French press: coarse

      Moka pot: fine to medium-fine

Signs your grind needs adjusting

Espresso runs too fast (under 20 sec) → grind finer

Espresso runs too slow or chokes → grind coarser

Bitter, burnt taste → grind coarser

Sour, watery taste → grind finer

Practical tips

      Adjust gradually, in small steps

Always test with freshly ground coffee, ideally right before brewing

A quality grinder with a stable, repeatable setting makes a big difference in consistency
