Great coffee starts with a clean machine. Coffee and milk residues spoil the taste, wear out components and – especially in the milk system – pose a real hygiene risk.

In a café, hotel or office, though, cleaning has to be quick, reliable and possible without any training. That is why WMF has developed a range of cleaning systems – from a simple manual solution to the fully automatic WMF AutoClean. In this article we explain how they work and which one suits your business.

Why cleaning matters so much

WMF cleaning systems are built on three principles:

Simple

Your team needs no training. The process is designed so that anyone can do it correctly – fewer mistakes, less downtime.

Fast

Thorough does not mean slow. The machine is cleaned in no time and ready again quickly, even on the busiest days.

Hygienic

Anyone working with food must follow strict hygiene rules. WMF cleaning systems are HACCP-compliant and help you meet the requirements.

WMF AutoClean: manual cleaning is a thing of the past

WMF AutoClean is WMF's most advanced cleaning solution. You define the cleaning cycle once – from then on the machine cleans its coffee and milk systems by itself at the scheduled time, without any manual intervention.

The cleaning liquid for the milk system and the cleaning granulate for the coffee system are stored inside the machine and dosed precisely and automatically. That means not only less work, but also consistent results – no guesswork with dosing.

Cleaning the milk system

As soon as the milk hose is connected, cleaning starts automatically. To cut downtime, the hose can be rinsed while the milk is being refilled.

The cleaning granulate is stored in the machine, dosed automatically and only needs replacing every 60 cleaning cycles. After cleaning, the machine is immediately ready for the next cup.

WMF cleaning systems at a glance

Which system your machine uses depends mainly on its milk system. These are the four main options:

1

Basic Clean manual

The machine is cleaned with a cleaning solution and water, then rinsed with fresh water. The milk outlet is dipped into a special cleaning liquid by hand every day. For machines with Basic Milk or without a milk system.

2

Easy Clean automatic

A fully automatic system for Easy Milk, using a special cleaning container and cleaning tablets. Once the hose is connected, the machine fills the container with water and cleans automatically with cleaning solution, water and steam.

3

Plug+Clean semi-automatic

The Plug+Clean adapter is plugged into the matching port on the machine or milk cooler, and the milk system is cleaned with hot water and steam. There is no need to dismantle the milk frother every day – manual cleaning in cleaning liquid is only required once a week. On the WMF 950 S and 1100 S the same principle is called Click+Clean, with the adapter connected to the hot-water outlet instead.

4

Clean in Place fully automatic

The most advanced system: it works like Easy Clean but also cleans the milk frother automatically. The ultimate in efficiency for all machines with Dynamic Milk.

Which system is right for your business?

The right choice depends on your volume, your menu and your team. A few practical rules of thumb:

  • Few milk drinks, low volume: a simple system such as Basic Clean is often enough – as long as it is followed every day.
  • Lots of cappuccinos and freddos, changing staff: automatic systems such as Easy Clean, Plug+Clean or Clean in Place reduce mistakes and save time.
  • High volume, hotels, chains: WMF AutoClean removes the manual routine altogether – ideal when every minute counts.
  • In every case: use genuine WMF cleaning agents and follow the machine's prompts – that protects both the machine and its warranty.

Cleaning also means profitability

For WMF, cleaning is part of a bigger idea: less time and effort for your staff, with no interruptions to the workflow. A machine that is easy to clean properly delivers consistent taste, breaks down less often and stays in service longer – which shows directly in the return on your investment.
